    Hi all,

We're getting our house plastered and and we just want a paint finish on it. However, some decorators and plasterers have said cracks may start to appear in the plaster even weeks after its done. Is it a good idea to leave the plaster bare and paint or would most people at least use lining paper-this seems expensive though. If it does crack in places is it easy for anyone to repair? Place was built in 1860's so quite old.

    Thanks for the advice

By plastered do you mean from bare brick / stone or skim over the top of what is there already ?

Old house move about quite a bit especially if you have trees nearby and we go through dry spells followed b wet. Hence they are quite prone to cracking in lots of places

If it is from the bare stonework I would leave it for a while to see how it settles and to see if there are any signs of damp.

If you are skimming then it should be ok to paint once the plaster has achieved an even colour

Fine cracks and blemishes can be fixed with a good quality filler and then sanding.

Its mostly a skim over existing plaster, in places the old plaster is coming away so assume will be knocked off and redone. Sounds as if we'd be ok just with a paint finish then if we're willing to fill cracks here and there as they develop.

Yes, you shouldn't have too many, just a few hairline ones which will only show on light colour finishes.

Makes a lot of sense, a lot quicker and far less mess and would work out less expense!;)

Too late plasterer is booked and coming so skim is happening. Doesn't mean we couldn't line with this Wallrock Fibreliner after that but the whole idea was to not have to mess about with wallpaper and just paint it! Fail.
