Electric Water Heater Used With Shower Pump

Apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere. I'm currently converting my garage into living space, part of which will incorporate an additional shower room. The current gas heating system for the rest of the house (13 radiators and two bathrooms) is just about at its limit. So, what I propose is to leave the existing system as is, but add a small independent hot water system for the new shower room that has its hot water from an electrical source rather than gas. I have identified several options to achieve this by installing a small electric combi boiler. However, the boilers are quite expensive (over a thousand pounds), and I wondered, can anyone recommend any other electric heater or similar that will function in line with a shower pump and will supply a basin as well?

What about a single supply pump on the cold feed and a standard electric shower? Would obviously depend on the flow rate available, but if everthing checks out it could be an option.

Hi Mike, thanks for the suggestion, which is a really good, easy option. The problem is that I just do not like electric showers, and neither does my wife. In the scheme as it stands, the shower room would be ideally totally isolated from the electric water heater (and the shower pump), which would be located in the utility room next door. The only connections to the shower would be the hot and cold pipework.

How about installing a dedicated hot water tank for the shower and a simple immersion heater. Maybe consider an economy 7 tariff it will be used a lot.

Or - increase the size of your main hot water tank (assuming you have one).

Increasing insulation if possible (e.g. cavity fill, loft, windows and doors) will reduce load on the existing system.

What about a hot water tank that is heated by the current gas boiler - but only at night when the rest of the system is not in use? Move to a three zone controller.

Hi Jimbo,
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm looking at that as a solution. We already have economy 7, so it makes absolute sense.

Hi Mike, that's a great suggestion. What a brilliant forum this is!
