I am sure that if you talked to a lot of older
tradesman they will tell you that a lot of premises (
hospitals schools etc )used gloss on exterior and
interior walls and ceilings before emulsions were
readily available.

Then they will be OAP's know then - even if they were apprentices when they did it that way :^O
