    Hello All

I originally posted this in the Painter Talk, but now think the carpenters talk may have been a better forum to try...

I have constructed a fireplace surround out of solid maple, in which I plan to burn logs / coal.

I would like to apply an oil finish, will this finish discolor? If Yes what finish should I use.

    All help appreciated

yes it will discolour any way, oils agood finish as it is heat resistant too a point but try PATINA from screwfix its brill on maple ,I've done loads of kitchen doors in maple all finished with it,looks good and two coats later sets like rock with a nice sheen. Use oil as a sealant coat .
