Went to my father-in-law recently - outside Oldham. Called in at the local Chinese/Chippy - Cod £4.10 each, large chips £3.10. One problem with the chips - the covered two 12" plates to a depth pr about 1.5-2" ...
About 30 years back I visited Harry Ramsden's which was out in the sticks somewhere near Leeds IIRC. It had quite the reputation back then but, in due course, went all corporate and very average IMO. Such a simple dish but easy to get it wrong.
Last time i had fish and chips at "the best place in town", it was rank and i had food poisoning, i could have a steak for a couple of ££££ more.
