Tony, i think you need a brake calliper piston re-wind tool, seen here at the bottom of the page -

I have used one on a new Mini and an Audi A4 (audi should be the same as your passat)

i think i paid £20 for the tool from halfords

    Hope that helps

Wedge of wood, and draw some fluid out of the pot and leave the lid off(or loosen a bleed screw if there is one).

    Mr. Handyandy - really

Aye long time since i did pads............ or any servicing come to think of it.
How much have pads changed in the last few years?
Like andy i used to use the same method, drain a bit of fluid from the resevoir, wrap a rag round it for spillage and use a bit of wood to compress.
Slap a bit off copper ease on the new pads and chuck em in with whatever shims etc in the kit.
Maybe i'm out of tough though and it's all new fangled now!

You NEED the wind back tool. Cannot be done with wood or pliers. It has to be screwed back into the housing.
I know, because I did it.
Dont forget to open the brake fluid reservior first though.

    Yer Gypsey!

What ya doing messing around like a Doley when you've got a relatively new Car?

Just take it to Kwik Fit or sumat if you don't want VAG Main Dealer prices and it'll be done in 30mins for minimal money.

    my thoughts exactly sine,
thank god my days of crawling under cars are long gone.
My local garage would charge £30-£40 to do the pads, pick the car up and bring it back so harldy worth the bother.
    Even main dealers,
I had my van serviced at benfield motors vw.
I dropped the van off, they gave me a spanking new crafter for the day, i used their fuel, took the van back, picked mine up, serviced, book stamped £124-00 inc vat!!!

mind you while i was in there the salesman offered me £7k for my van against a new one.
£7k for the van i gave them £13k for last year!!!!!!
I explained to him how difficult it was to remove size 9's from your back passage and he left a bit red faced saying he had a call to make ;)

ANY Audi in GREY is SOOOooooooo dull.

THE most boring car has got to be the Toyota Avensis but the VW Passat ain't far behind.
