Screwfix Select
One for the tech team running the forum...
I can't seem to stay logged in!

I am technically competent. I'm sure it's to do with cookies, or similar, at the Screwfix end.

Whenever I log in I tick the "remember me" box. Just recently I'm not remembered and have to log in each time.

It's the same on on
  • Different browsers
  • Different Operating systems
  • Different devices, (i.e. different PCs)
  • Fresh install
  • Different address, (i.e. tried at my folks, (Plusnet) in case it was related to my ISP, (Virgin media) or IP address)
The only place is doesn't seem to be an issue is on my mobile phone!

It been like it a couple of weeks or so. It's taken me a while to get round to asking for Screwfix help as it's taken me this long to eliminate everything I've listed!

Can someone at the Screwfix technical folk help please.

Thanks,

Cando

I would bet on windows update problems, I've had all sorts of problems for the last two weeks. Yesterday my laptop was updated and restarted three times and now seems ok, so I would just wait a few more days

Cando, cookies are stored on your machine, not at the SF end. If you are deleting cookies when you close your browser then it won't remember you. You either need to change your cookie settings for your browser or create an exception for the SF site.

Hope that helps.

This is the first report on this.

I personally have not had any issues using our forum daily. How long have you had problems? Have anyone else had the same issues?

Peter

I'm not deleting the cookies.
This is the only site I have this issue with.
As I said... The problem follows me onto different computers at different addresses.
The only place it's not an issue is on my smartphone.

Not sure of exactly when it started... I'd guess about 3 weeks ago... Though it could be slightly longer!

Thanks for investigating. I'll provide any other info requested!

Cando

It's not a Windows issue... I normally use Linux Mint, (and I've tried different browsers on that)... I've tried a "Live" Linux installation, and Windows... Same on all platforms... And only this site!

Cando

But they're generated at the Screwfix end.
My elimination of the things I have is what leads me to think it's at the Screwfix end!

I assume it is cookies that keeps us logged in, and not some other mysterious technology??

Cando

Yes mate, but as far as I am aware it is the cookie data on your machine that tells the site whether you are logged in or not. If you aren't deleting them then I can only think it is a comms issue between the site and the stored data, but I'm no expert.

Any more help possible with this Screwfix Peter?

Cando

Hi

Thank you for the time frame, nothing has changed on our system in the last month and the last change was a server update back in December, which would not have caused this issue.

I still had no other reports except @WillyEckerslike, do you have any more details you can share if there is any similarity to the set up and issue that @candoabitofmoststuff is experiencing for a common factor?

I's suspecting this is a cookie issue your end, and I would recommend clearing as others recommended, but could be other changes that you might have in place such as any security software you might have installed. Just as a double check you are not viewing in a incognito window, which by default no cookie data would be saved.

This would appear to be the same issue - https://community.screwfix.com/threads/is-it-me-or.261116/#post-2084977

Thanks for highlighting this, is this the same issue you are having or did you solve it?
Hi Peter. I'm not sure. My windows laptop appears to work correctly but either of my android based mobile or tablet running Chrome have behaved per the thread I linked to - access the forum to find you're logged out, click on a topic and you get logged in. I'll check both tomorrow morning and report back.

In my opinion this is 100% a cookie issue. I have all my browsers, mobile and my main PC set to delete all data including cookies the moment i close the browser. There are various browsers that do this anyway from first install, "Brave" browser being one.
What is your browser of choice @candoabitofmoststuff ?

Right...
I don't understand what happened, but the thread Willy pointed to in post#13 gave me something to try...
I had a shortcut to the forum on my browser toolbar... been there for ages, (probably years).
Instead of using that I used the link to the forum right at the bottom of the main Screwfix page... It took me there logged in!

So it "looks like" my shortcut had somehow got corrupted to delete cookies on opening???

So at the moment it's working ok on my normal setup, "Brave" browser, on Linux mint.
I've deleted the original shortcut, and made another one, which seems to be working ok... I get in still logged in.

It doesn't explain why I had the problem on other PCs, or on a fresh install, or on my dad's PC though. The issue may still be there... I'm not in a position to check right now.
Thanks all for the interest.
I'll report back if I still have the issue.

Cando

EUREKA!
I think...

My original shortcut was pointing at http://community.screwfix
i.e. not https://

My new shortcut is https://community.screwfix.com

When I was typing in on other browsers, I was just typing "community.screwfix.com", which defaults to the http:// address, not the https:// address

Maybe I have been having the problem since the server change in Decmber... It doesn't feel like it's that long ago, but it must have been since the secure site came into being?

Anyway,
Thanks again to all.
Lets hope this might help others!

Regards,
Cando

Glad it's sorted

We have been using a secure socket on on our forum for many many years, the server update was simply a new box with a change of hamster keeping it running.

Thanks for sharing your solution for others

That would appear to be the cause. I used the browser homepage link on Chrome on my android tablet just now and I wasn't logged in. When I checked the address it was only http. I added the 's' and was logged in.
