The rough opening in brick wall is 35/36 inches, can i use thicker spacers to fit a casing for a 30 inch door ? Im ready to scrap the whole idea and remain doorless tia

Make a frame and then stick a liner in.

So is this just a straight forward job for a joiner? Im being led to believe its gonna cost a hell of a lot more because of difficulties

As long as your archs are wide enough to cover to cover the extra wood, it's more work but not unusual.

Was told id still have to change frame and smaller seemed easier I thought youd just use thicker spacers or whatever you call them

Load of cack, you can use a 33" door to fit, may have to plane a bit off if the opening is tight to get the lining plumb.

Change your carpenter, he's clearly not a tradesman, sounds more like a chancer.
