    Hi everyone.
I need some advice in regards to replacing my bathroom extractor fan. The one in the picture attached has been removed. It used to come on when I turned the bathroom light on and off instantly when the light turned off. I believe it was a 12v fan and has a transformer outside bathroom. The fan broke and has been binned however I'm having trouble replacing it.

As you can see from the image I have 3 wires sticking out the wall. Which I thought meant I needed a 12v timer fan. I've tried this though and it didn't work.

Any advice on what fan I need to buy?

    1. Is the new fan you bought 12v ac or 12V dc?
    2. Did you replace just the fan?
    3. Do you know the make and model of the old fan?
    4. Do you have a meter to measure the dc output of the power supply? This might be faulty rather than the old fan.

To replace like for like, you will need a Extra Low Voltage Timer (ELV) fan and transformer.
    Something like this:
MANROSE XF100LVT/SC 100MM (4") AXIAL BATHROOM EXTRACTOR FAN WITH TIMER WHITE 240V (14750)

You have two sets of cables. Both cables have grey, brown and black. Dont get them mixed up! one of those is the mains input. the other is the lower voltage output from the timer transformer to the fan.

Can't comment on the connections to the old fan, can't read the make or model from your long distance photo.

PS, from the location photo, you probably don't need an ELV fan. A mains one is OK.

    1. I tried this fan but didn't replace the transformer

    2. Correct just the fan

    3. envirovent eco fan

    4. I have test the power supply and all seems fine

The Toolstation fan comes with its own power supply. They are all different.
You have to change both the fan and the power supply. Hope you havent bu88wered up the fan, the old transformer says 17V on it, and thats a heap bigger than 12V

Thanks I'll look into that one.

Yeah I can only see one grey wire which is the one that was connected up to the old fan (envirovent eco fan)

Sorry I meant just one grey coming out wall. So basically I need to either get another 17v fan or replace the transformer and fan together with one of the ones mentioned above?

No. You either need to buy a fan that is identical - same manufacturer and part number as your old fan, or you need to buy a fan and its power unit, and fit both parts of the new fan.

I'm gonna go the new fan and transformer route as the old fan is around £180 to buy new. With there being 3 wires, a black brown and grey will it be a timer fan I should buy? As I would prefer to use the wires that are already there just connect to new transformer/fan

Are you aware of what wires do what?

Am I right in thinking the top one is the wire that's going to the fan?

Note that the old fan needed three wires going to it from the ******. If you buy the manrose one then that only needs two wires.

Does that mean I would need to rewire?

No, of course not. just use two of the three existing conductors. You can even choose which two you fancy!
