We're working on a timber (species unknown) batten banister which is to run from the face of the stringer to right up to the ceiling.

    See similar example here:

Whilst the lower section of the batten can be nailed, screwed or glued to the stringer, we're wondering if there's any tips of how to strongly fix the small batten to the ceiling without it showing (hidden)?

We aren't wanting a batten top plate.

Cut out squares of the ceiling and house the battens into the trimmer joist above by roughly a quarter of an inch, a router would be the easiest bet to achieve this, or use a multitool, or a sharp Stanley knife and hammer with a sharp chisel.
