Hi, ive recently bought an old listed property (1877) and found 2 huge holes leading to a chimney. The loft is very shallow and awkward to get into. Today i went into it to & crawled to the end gable where i know 4 chimneys go to a single stack directly above the Apex of the gable end. I found 2 huge holes in the gable end sandstone which went straight into what i think must be an old chimney which used to be used in the kitchen. My concern is that the old sandstone looks to have erroded away revealing the hole. The sandstone on the outside of the gable end is also eroded in this area. My concern is that the chimney which is held up by this stone, collapses inward on my daughters bedroom. Any advice on how i should fix this?

Brick it up, even if that's a temporary fix until you can replace it with new sandstone.
