How do I avoid the lintel?

Hi, so I'm trying to put up a curtain rod above a fairly wide window but I doubt I have a powerful enough drill to get through any concrete/metal. How tall/wide are the average lintels?

There was a curtain rail already nailed in (by the original builder ~40 years ago most likely), about 3 inches above the top of the window, so would anywhere above that point be ok? I read that most curtains are added about 6 inches above the window so would that be a safer bet?

This is my first time doing any household DIY so many thanks!

  2. hi, the lintels normally span 150mm past the edges of the window reveals

These days I reduce the number of fixings and use a builders adhesive.
The fixings are more to hold the curtain rail until the adhesive cures.

Given that you will likely want a central bracket otherwise they'll sag over time, I'd ask friends to see if anyone can lend you an SDS drill for a day - with the right tools it's a 10 min job.
