How should I extend this banister in front of the window?

My banister has been removed from the previous owner but I want to put it back. The current rail is slightly above the window sill and putting a post in front of it seems odd.

Any creative ideas to avoid it looking odd? There was previously a banister there as you can see the gaps for the spindles on the floor.
