How to stop debris from unused chimney

Lived in my house for 6 months and the fireplace is open, believe there used to be a gas fire but this was removed by previous owner at least 15 years ago. The top of the chimney has a metal cowl that looks like the below. Want to put in the open fireplace an electric stove but there are bits of soot like debris coming down very occasionally. Its not particularly draughty at all and no issues with damp etc so i just want something to prevent debris falling down whilst still allowing ventilation ? All i can see from researching is to get the chimney swept but id prefer not to as i have no intentions on using the chimney for a real fire anyway and there is no flue liner. For info this chimney has definitely been out of use for at least 15 years.

any recommendations? Thanks

Why not block the bottom of the flue inside out of sight if not using it but don't forget to put some sort of ventilation.

I was thinking of doing this with one of those chimney sheep blockers but not sure if that would provide enough ventilation
