plus sleep system, plus cooking equipment plus camp fees plus all the other things you need in a tent, lights, trinkets ornaments, plants etc, it all adds up to more than hotels
Financially probably nothing. It may even cost you a little more. But think how many slugs. snails, earwigs, woodlice and all the other wildlife that will love cuddling up with you in your tent overnight and feel protected.
well thats put me off, I am a fearless adventurer but I hate bugs and moths and things. I recall a time a moth came into my hotel room once. I screamed the place down. They had to move rooms for me I was so distraught over the whole experience.
Make sure you wear a surgical mask overnight. Stops the spiders crawling into your mouth and trying to choke you, or worse still you swallow them
May sound stupid but is there a way of keeping moths and bugs away from a tent? Just very wary now that I may have spiders etc climbing in with me. I would scream extremely loud if I saw one and wouldnt want to disturb the other campers. Other problem is that I sleep in a silk nighty to save weight on my bike so may be a disturbing sight to the other campers in the small hours of the morning.
I always used to shake my boots out in the mornings before putting them on, Scorpions were the biggest danger they seem to like boots but even in Europe its a good habit to get into. Have seen some pretty big spiders in Europe but mostly harmless, they just want a cuddle now and again.
A mix of lavender and pepermint oils (available in places like Home Bargains - a few drops of each) in 500ml water sprayed around will deter most spiders etc. Zip up the tent door before putting on any lights to keep flying insects out. A fly screen by the door will also help Or take @Ind spark as your bodyguard and Punka Waller
I think I am going to pass on the money saving idea, I am going to stick with Hotels and B&Bs as they offer a better nights rest and offer the creature comforts that I am used to. You dont have to camp out to have an adventure, my motorbike and the scenery is the adventure plus I usually find a piano in a hotel to play where everyone gathers around me playing and we have a gay old time singing and laughing. It is much more sociable than sat in a tent in the dead of night being terrified. Final answer!!!
