Tis quite usual on older properties for the door frame to have twisted over time. First time you notice it is when you change the door. Not unusual for the old door to have developed the same twist to compensate for the frame. As stated earlier either adjust the hinges or, re-cut the door frame as suggested above.

Manweb is correct, those are your only options. If you move the bottom hinge out to split the difference and push the top in by a couple of mm then that should help it. Let the customer understand that the frame or walls are clearly out and that you can solve this by doing the above.

When the difference is split you usually don't notice it that much because the facing will cover the most part of it.

Kris, maybe you think im arrogant but im not the one asking diy questions as a time served tradesman so im probably in a good position to be,
its all part of learning to hang a door and i thought most apprentices learnt this at the same time they learned to hang a door, i would have had my ar se kicked round the site if i didnt know how to do this 6 years in and took a lot of stick for it for weeks so as said previously take it on the chin.

i assume you are now self employed?,the next lesson is in sales, you now have this door that wont close properly so this is your chance to explain to the customer that he/she needs a new frame because the old one has twisted preventing the nice new door fitting properly which will cause drafts and may cause the door to twist, now on a job like you say which is a very old house there will be quite a bit of work involved in fitting a new frame and making it all good again so you would probably be able to charge in the region of £200 extra for it.
    more work and more profit.

no need to thank me - Your Welcome ;)

patronising it may be but if he gets into the mentality of thinking like that on every job it will put a lot of money in his back pocket.

you can patronise me all day if you are giving me advise that will do that

Imo taking a door frame out in an old building is complete overkill and asking for a long list of knock on problems, such as plaster losing its key when you take facings off, matching existing mouldings etc... not worth it to make a few extra quid!

If its the door stop thats warped and not the new door then its a replacement door stop, If you try cut material out of the lower portion of the stop, the latch keeper will no longer be in the correct place!

As per first few posts, throw the door a little with the hinges or fit a new stop and scribe it to the door! Charge extra obviously!

They are not problems but opportunitys, that is where you make your money,

think about the little back street garage that fixes your car, he bodges and doctors it together and gets you second hand parts to keep your price down, you might go back a couple of times because the fix didnt work, if you need new brake pads and your discs are a bit worn he will say your going to need new discs in a few months. Now you are driving round wondering when you are going to break down.

now go to the dealership, no messing around - your car needs what it needs and they will replace it. they will fit new discs then tell you afterwards
now you go to pick up your car and have a bit of a shock at the bill but then say to your self "oh well at least it wont give me any more trouble for a while." and you are glad they spotted the problem

now think about the 2 businesses which would you rather be

the back street guy - known for being cheap and will bodge it up to get it working, he does not look like a wealthy guy his workshop looks like a tip, his office is a mass off disorganisation, he is often there working till 9-10 o'clock at night.

the dealership guy - known for being professional and doing a good job, not the cheapest but will get the job done and you know it will be right, his workshop looks professional and organised and his office is a plush affair with a nice waiting area and a fancy computer system. he goes home at 5, takes plenty of holidays and has a good range of staff to cover every task.

    Back to the door frame

Leave it with a gap and after you have gone they are discussing the new doors with friends and they will say that the one does not shut properly but he tried to doctor it a bit to get it a bit better, its a shame he couldnt get it right but i will have to live with it.
now from that the friend thinks of the joiner like the back street mechanic. Ideal for a cheap job but they are not going to trust you with anything complicated if you cant even get a door to fit properly which is a shame as they are looking for someone to do a loft conversion for them. so the only referrals you are going to get are from the people who want a cheap job

fit the new frame and the conversation will be along the lines of " one of the old frames had twisted so he had to take it out and repair the brickwork behind it then he sealed it all with foam to stop any drafts, he has managed to match it all back in just like the originals
and the room is a lot warmer now he has finished"
The friends are impressed at what a good job he has done and have him round to do some work for them. They dont expect the cheapest price but they trust they will get a good job which to them = value for money

Always bearing in mind that in a house built in the 1800's, if the doorframe has twisted over time , it's also possible that the wall has moved also. If this is the case then it's either move the hinges as before or, replace the door frame for one with planted stops.

Point taken! In an ideal world you would fix every problem you come across, In this situation however, going on the basis that the customers have specced hollow fill 4 pannel doors in a period house, I would imagine they would rather not go to the extra cost of new door liner, all the mess and making good! I,d be surprised if the brick wall would have moved 12mm, if it did the plaster would have a nice big crack down it!

Replacing the stop isn,t a bodge, If done properly It would look perfect.

Think the point is that every caprpenter worth his salt could fix this using various diferent methods, none of them are dificult. The most dificult bit is first identifying what is wrong and then choosing which of the many fixes is most cost/ease efficient!

    Good luck to original poster!

I think one of a carpenters jobs is to make things look right that aren't right- hence all the door hanging tricks on this thread. If the wall/door is warped I would rehang it so the twist was at the bottom if possible where it is less noticeable. The idea of removing the door lining with all the associated joinery/repairs/decorating on a 1800s house...

No one yet has suggested perhaps a small planted stop on the existing frame. Say something like 6mm X 25mm pinned to the doorframe. Possibly not the best solution but easy to do. TBH how many people actually look at the door when it's open?

I did mention that joinerjohn but apparently according to chippie244 we are idiots

Have been back on the job today the door is fine its the frame that is twisted the customer is happy and understands its an old frame and is not fussed about it so have just split the differance on the hinges. But thanks guys anyway.

Kris, take no notice of that idiot manweb and his alter egos. He has spent the day having conversations with himself and calling himself a good carpenter. He thinks that just because he looks up text in joinery books that he can call himself a good carpenter, what utter cr@p.
He has got the cheek to come on here and put you down/insult you for asking a question, Have you seen his previous postings? Just look at the basic 1rst year college questions he has had to ask in previous threads.
Its Trolls like manweb that try and intimidate and belittle genuine posters on here, when in reality, they have no job, unhappy, depressed and only take comfort in posting sh@te on this forum.
Best thing everyone can do is ignore this sad idiot in the hope he will get bored and go away. And maybe even get a job at KFC...
