Having recently noticed the mortar on our 1985 built house has quite deep holes from what i can only assume to be mortar bees from previous years. I wondered whether the house would need pointing given the extent of the damage that has been done or whether there is an alternative solution?

In addition to this the mortar in general does appear to be somewhat receded especially on the corners of the property.

Please see the photos below & thanks for any advice.

The mortar appears to have receded a bit and is quite crumbly/porous. In my non expert opinion, it isn't crucial so doesn't need doing now as the recess is relatively shallow, but it will need doing at some point in the next 5 years or so.

It looks to me like it was built with recessed joints. The small bee holes would be easy to fill.
