Is United v Liverpool a true Derby match?

I always classed Derbies as teams from the same City? United v City, Liverpool v Everton, Spurs v Arsenal etc. Has the term ‘Derby’ just over spilled into big rivalries now?

Couldn't agree more. The only Derbies are Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol, Nottingham, Sheffield and London. Have I missed any? The others are just 'big rivalries'.

However the real, classic Derbies, are where the team name contains the name of the city. So that excludes Liverpool and London leaving:

    Manchester City v Manchester United
    Bristol City v Bristol Rovers
    Sheffield Wednesday v Sheffield United

Not sure if Nottingham Forest v Notts County qualifies.

As an Aston Villa fan I would also argue Villa - Birmingham as being a big derby

It is a hate match, very rare to see a player or manager leave one to join the other.

Quite right Dan. I omitted Birmingham in error. Apologies.
