Not very professional to butt joint granite. Silicon and then polish but best avoided.

Ok, how should I joint the two pieces if not a butt joint?

There is nowt wrong with joining granite. But....... you are always going to see it. The co I use has a little machine that clamps to the granite, they then use mitre mate and the machine pulls them together. Masking tape either side then silicone the top.
If ya doing it yourself I would just use silicone.

Well you have to butt joint but it is best avoided by buying new lengths.
