Hi - my kitchen walls have at some stage been painted straight onto the plaster followed by layers of paper, and more paint (gloss and emulsion). Will a steamer get this lot off or will that just remove the paper and leave the paint underneath. I would just paint over it but there has been a leak in the past and some of the paper has peeled off down to the plaster but the rest is stuck like glue.
Whats the best way to approach this without ruining the plaster - Thanks

Well, Gert, thats the result of bone idle DIY over the years. People are just too eager to put the "finishes" on and have no time for preparation....X-(

No easy way of doing this. Try steamer if you have one but plenty of scraping and elbow grease is all thats needed!

A paper scorer or a wood block with nails just protruding the surface will allow steam to penetrate through layers of paint/paper. Just run it all over the walls in advance.

You may have to caulk the wall after though!
