Ledger board for deck - fixings??

Hi there, I'm aiming to replace a complete rotten and botched decking, and its not a huge space 2.5 x 3.2m approx.
Numerous things I have to work around but one thing is the ledger board.

I'm unsure whether to use coach bolts and Fischer plugs or masonry coach bolts.

I had some 120mm M10 bolts and scrap 2x4 to see how they would work in the brick (had some left under the decking so they be been there yonks)
70mm deep 12mm hole in the brick and when I got about 15mm-20mm from the bolt being flush to the wood, the brick split in two.

Is this purely because its a single brick on its own?
I'm happy with DIY but I need to see things done rather using numbers/measurements hence my mini experiment any advice is great

Owen

unsupported brick, probably not a great simulation of how the whole wall will behave. Also with the hole not straight, it looks like as the brick and wood pulled together it might have put a bending load on the brick possibly? id recommend 2x6 also, not 2x4, as you can spread your two rows of bolts better vertically, can only help spread the loads.

If you are really concerned about the bricks in the building, you could use a chemical fixing and use M12 stud. should be plenty strong .

i just used 6 x100mm wood screws with brown plugs over a 3.5 metre run its been O.K for 15 years now.

Over a 3.5m length you really need about 6-7 M12s to support a well fixed ledger, with them staggered above and below the middle of the ledger horizontally.

If the bricks are crumbling or not providing a good substrate for bolts use 6x120 woodscrews with brown plugs or frame fixings straight into the wall and prop the ledger with a couple of 4x2 legs underneath so it can never drop unless the bottom of the legs rot.

Thanks for that reply, it definitely was a sketchy simulation and I think you're bang on with why it split. I'm using 2x6 but just had scrap 2x4 lying about. I will do 2 rows of bolts as you say thanks for reply

Thanks I hadn't thought of props for some reason! I'll use them as belts and braces, I'm definitely overthinking this whole deck lol
