Im going to make an outdoor sofa, using sleepers and some cushions from ikea. I was thinking of staining the wood a light grey. Im unsure on whether to use tanalised or oak. The sofa will be in a covered area. Is there much difference in appearance after applying staining? Is oak that much better?

Yes. Make something you're able to be proud of.

Def oak. Tanalised, unless dried usually has a high moisture content and joints will open up etc. Also won’t finish as nicely.

Go to Oakland, 'no veneer in here' and buy one of their Oak sofa's and throw away the cushions....won't buy the Oak for what they turn it out at!
