    To my shame I can't ever remember doing oak skirting.
    Got some 5 inch pencil round to do and I'm wondering if the coping saw will 'cope' with cutting a but and scribe or do you guys mitre it? I know butt and scribe is always best but..

    Scribe the internals and mitre the externals. A coping saw is fine but I use a Japanese pull saw for the straight portion of the cut when doing them by hand. Clean up with a rasp or half round file if needed.

    @WillyEckerslike
    It went very well thanks. Cutting the feather edge at the top of the pencil for the internals can be a bit tricky. What brand coping saw do you use?
    I use an eclipse but I can't remember if I bought some non eclipse blades because they warp and buckle.

    I lost the coping saw I had been given as a kid by my father a couple of years ago - that was an Eclipse. I had to buy one in a hurry and got a Stanley from our host. It's okay but nothing could replace the one I lost even if it was better.

    Eclipse blades.

    Glad it went well today.

    I've still got the Eclipse i bought in the mid 80's i think. As far as blades go, over the years i have found that most blades are actually not too bad. What matters is how "taught" the coping saw can actually pull them. When new, most blades are razor sharp, but unless they are absolutely taught they are all rubbish. That comes down to the coping saw and Eclipse beets them all.

    I live in hope that it will mysteriously turn up at one of my son's houses. It's not like me to lose tools but I cannot for the life of me think what happened to it. I was given it for my sixth birthday. Gutted.

    I have truly been wondering if it's under some floorboards on a job but my memory isn't what it used to be.
