Painting over gloss on pvc

Upstairs in our house the doors, skirting and architrave have all been painted with various layers of gloss paint. I had planned to strip the paint off everything and start again but in the process discovered that the architrave is made from pvc and didn't take well to the heat gun! I would rather use a silk emulsion than glossing them again but they don't sand down very well and there's also lots of beading which is difficult to sand efficiently (there's a panel at the top where I'm guessing a transom window used to be). So my question is, is it possible to paint over the gloss with a primer of some kind and then silk emulsion on top of that?
