Hi, doing a DIY project on the stairs. Currently have all white bannister, spindles etc. Wanting to paint them grey.

Prep wise, do I need to sand the bannister back to bare wood and then start again with primer, undercoat, topcoat, or do I only need to lightly sand it?

poor quality of decorating on our new build, so wouldn’t surprise me if it was never primed etc before being painted originally.

there are certain spindles that have knots seeping through so will need to take those back to bare to apply the solution, would it look strange if some spindles had been taken completely back and others hadn’t?

Sorry for the lengthy post, would really appreciate advice!

Zinnser BIN.. I use rattle cans on spindles and easier but warm them in water..

It's a shellac so blocks knots.
