Dear All, We have an upstairs en suite bathroom which until a couple of months ago hasnt ever given us any trouble. Since then, there has been a horrible musty, mouldy odour that is coming from somewhere. We've checked all walls, floors and ceilings for any signs of damp or discolouration, have run water in all the taps and drains to ensure there are no dried out traps, water is flowing well in sink/shower drains too. Have tried bleaches and plug cleaners etc, all to no avail. The smell doesnt seem to be stronger at any point in the bathroom that we can identify. Its driving us nuts! Any suggestions as to source and remedy would be very gratefully received!!!
theres two inside walls, one with a sink attached to it, the toilet and shower are adjacent to outside walls. not sure if there is pipe work in the stud wall, but can say that when I stuck my head in the under sink cabinet, the smell did not seem stronger.
Check out the shower. Condition of tile grout / silicone sealant. If small amounts of water is getting thru to the plaster / plasterboard behind the tiles ,it soaks in . mould grows in there and then a musty smell follows. If there is any significant breach / leakage you would see evidence on ceiling below.
thanks, will check for this. no signs of any leaks on the ceiling below, but will have another look at the grout and silicone!
