Plasterboard before tiling, is it necessary?

Side question - what's the typical thickness for adhesive and min to max ranges?

Roughly, tile and adhesive about 8mm. Adhesive around 2-3mm on good walls, 15mm+ on horrendous areas, but that really isn't recommended. It really depends on the tiles themselves what you can get away with.

Thanks Jord. Just noticed I have about 20mm gap between the 25mm ply and plate of the shower/diverter valve. Tiles are 8mm thick so adhesive should be able to make that up. However, noting I have ply there which perhaps isn't the best of surfaces for tiling on, will discuss with my tiler about putting 6mm hardiebacker board on top.
