Plasterboarding a single brick garage - Advice needed & Correct me if I'm wrong!

Hi all,

I'm planning on making our external single brick garage into a gym, to do so, I'll be adding plasterboard and plastering the walls and ceiling, I'll be adding a damp proof protection tot he conrete floor and then the foam gym flooring squares on top. i'll also be building a stud wall to seperate the gym and storage part of the garage.

I'm putting a list of stuff to buy together, and when I'm researching what to use, I'm seeing multiple conflicting recommendations, so I'm hoping someone can help!

For the walls/ceiling, I was thinking of doing the below in this order :

-Damp Proof Membrane or Paint (against the brick wall)
-25mmx50mm Battens (I'll be treating the battens and adding some form of waterproofing tape on the floor battens)
-Insulation between battens (I've found a reasonably priced Acoustic Roll insulation)
-Vapour Barrier
-Plasterboard (Either a standard or moisture resistant plasterboard)
-Plaster
-Paint

Would this be the correct/best way to go about it? and when it comes to insulation, can I use any cheap insulation since I'm doing both a damp proof membrane and vapour barrier?

Any help, advice or corrections are greatly appreciated!

Your proposed method seems reasonable. Consider using moisture-resistant plasterboard for added protection, especially in a humid environment like a gym. While a damp-proof membrane and vapor barrier are good practices, you might not need the cheapest insulation. Aim for a balance between cost and performance.

I would avoid actually fixing the battens to the wall.
Build a stud wall infront of the brick wall so you have a small air gap.
Screws will draw moisture out the brick and if you don't have a gap you will get damp issues becuase of the heat difference.
A small air gap will allow the wall to breath.
Use celotex type insulation but tape all cut edges and joins.
This should stop any moisture damage.

And fit a breathable membrane on the outside between the brick and the stud wall, to let the moisture out towards the brick.

Your proposals generally tally with Kingspan recommendations albeit you are infilling gaps with roll insulation but as its protected by vapour barrier from both sides cannot see this being an issue. Just make sure your pointing on outer garage wall is up to scratch

You can buy roof timber battens 25 x 50 to save treating yourself.

Which DPM product are you using? It may be worth checking as I thought most need screed / levelling compound on top (not the floor finish (foam tiles in your case)). You could also insulate the floor e.g. PIR boards?

You may also want to consider insulated plasterboard, some of which has an inbuilt vapour layer - e.g. Kingspan K118.
