I have new Sony DVD player, the manual for which states that it will play DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD+R, (amongst others), format discs.

Why, then, having burnt JPEG photographs and MP3 tracks onto a DVD+R disc, won't the bleedin' disc play??

Message reads 'unable to play this disc'.

    HELP!!

    did you 'finalise' the disc?

The disk format is one thing, the ability to decode all of the compression standards is another thing altogether. Does your Sony say it will decode JPEG & MP3? if it does maybe this may help, when burning a disk some programs will ask if you want the disk to be read by any machine/PC or just this one. You could check this in the properties tag.

No so Moonshine, you can burn just about anything to DVD, did a photo slide show only yesterday. One problem with domestic dvd players is they are not guaranteed to play all types of dvd disc. There are two types of commercial DVD disc's, then you have + and - and also rw+ and rw- and dvd roms, the different types are slowly all becoming compatable for all players but still not there yet.

Thanks for your advise so far chaps - I'll have another go as well as checking the players small print.

You can indeed burn JPEG/MP3 to DVD's - what I didn't mention was that the disc will play on the laptop that it was burnt on AND every other PC that we've tried!!

The content is a slide show with backing music, BTW.

I admit I only tried it once to a DVD disc & it wouldn't let me, so I never bothered again.

Unfortunately is does sound as though your player cannot decode MJPEG/MPEG3. If your laptop/PC has a composite video/audio out then you could just hook it up to the telly's/DVD's AV inputs and that way you can disply on a large screen, not ideal but just a thought

I fear what you have done(or may have done) is actually just burnt the 'files' onto the disc.

A DVD player will not play just 'files'.

It needs to know why the files are there.

That is, in your burning program, CHOOSE what you want to make.

Like PictureShow, or DVD video, or mp3 disc etc.

You cannot just put files on and hope it to play.

Ever noticed that when you load a DVD, the screen will tell you what type of disc it is, usually DVD Video ?

It has to find out this info first or it will tell you to naff orf.

    Does that help ?

Have you tried putting your photos on a normal disc?
Most DVDs read jpegs from normal discs and will play them.

Er, no, Mr HandyAndy, it doesn't.

You are just trying to confuse people, I'm sure.
The simple thing is this - PEOPLE, buy a DVD player that plays all types of disks and files. Ignore people telling you that you only need this type or that type, you need to be able to play all types of files otherwise in two or three years the DVD player will be sitting alongside the Betamax VCR in the loft.

    No Moonshine, not at all.

You can burn anything to any time of disk, except -Rom and -Ram disks, which are pre-recorded.
CD+R, CD-R, CD+RW, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW can all accept any type of file, assuming you have the correct software on your computer.

    Confused of Potton Island.
Are you trying to burn individual .jpg and .mp3 files, or a slide show with embedded music?
They are two different things, and whilst many DVD players will handle the former, I've never used a DVD player that will handle the latter, as it implicity requires a copy of the same presentation / slide show software that you created the original on. For sure your DVD player does not have Microsoft Windows XP running...

    freeclimber, you are spouting rubbish.

If you copy a file, a single file or many files to a DVD disc, it WILL NOT PLAY in your DVD player.

The disc MUST include instructions about what files are on the disc and how to play them, or the player won't recognise them.

Also, you list all the types of recordable discs and say that they ALL will accept all kinds of files/formats.

    NOT true.

CDR/RW for example cannot have DVD Video recorded to them. You have to convert the DVD files to VCD, then burn them.

There are many other files/formats that they won't accept, and which will need converting.

Next is the slide show with music. You say no chance.

    I say no problem.

You have to know what your recordable disc requires, and when you do, you put what you want on to it.

    Photos with music, no problem.

A DVD player that is capable of playing mp3, wma, whatever, and also capable of playing/showing jpeg, mpeg etc is more than capable of playing slideshows with music.

You have to know what you are doing.

You obviously need to read up a bit more.

    Mr. HandyAndy - really
