Aye, the fishing is always good here.....LOL!!!!!

Now, if anyone doesn't understand the above, let me know & I'll dumb-it-down for you........

It's refreshing to note we have a Labour Party spin doctor joining us!!! Very, very funny!!!!

Thanks to all for the laugh.

You are correct though - he could have been lying.
And again you are right - I am a *** for expecting
this guy to work to a reasonable standard without
    standing over him.
You should not stand over him, but be specific in
what you want. I'm not defending anyone, but 9 out of
10 problems are down to lack of understanding by one
if not all the parties. I'll only deal with one
person, that can be the bloke or his missus and if we
    understand each other well......

True enough - I thought I had been specific in what I wanted - I didn't realise that I had to specify that I wanted the rad to be hung straight and that I wanted the pipework to be straight too.

I think that one of the things plumbers learn
throughout their apprecticeships is when to get
    off
the mark when a job goes pear shaped and refuse to
come back to it - experience tells them that it is
going to be difficult to do the job properly, so
    they
    just don't bother.
No, quite wrong. If you are looking for someone to
    blame, check the mirror mate.

Of course I am to blame - I hired the eejit in the first place.

When I take my Merc to the garage, I hand them a type
written list, and if they don't do what's on the
list, I'll not pay them until they complete all items
    on the list!!

I always take my Merc to the main dealership - those guys don't need to be told what to do - they check it carefully at every service interval and restore anything that's not correct back to the condition it should be in - and I don't need to tell them that I actually want them to replace all the wheelnuts and tighten them - they would never consider cutting corners like this just because they have learned through experience when they can get away with it.

If apprenticeships are so good then why do we have a
    shortage in plumbers.

Because 10 years ago, it was 'uncool' to get your hands dirty and the kids were encouraged to go to university or college and do media studies.

    In my opinion apprenticeships
while good can take too long to produce the goods.

That's the whole point of an apprenticeship, start young, learn lots, in 10 years time you can produce the goods.

It seems to me that in a controlled learning environment
there can be no reason as to why quality plumbers
cannot emerge with a good set of skills and do as
good a job as any "time served plumber"

They will be able to solder two bits of pipe together then come here to ask how to shift an air lock.

    take a look
    here
    skills shortage
oh and for the record I am not a plumber nor do i
    want to be one.

Obviously not, and a wise choice

I think Elvis, has still got his lorry drivers attitude, drives like a man who thinks he owns the road.

Mind you, lorry drivers are poor drivers, but cab drivers are ten times worse.

Poor Elvis, with his bad back, bad attitude and lorry drivers big belly, he must be hell to live with!!!

A few more jobs in the Scottish papers this week, but all Plumbers' jobs are for time served people.

No employers are looking for a former IT *** that has had a 8 week course, that he paid £4K for...........lol!!!

Hopeful this will be the end of the CC's & the CCC's.

Have read most of the posts on this topic, thought I would join up to your forum, I started my apprentice some years ago, it only lasted around 7 months, unfortunately (Billy) my trainer past on he was a friend of the family, this put me off as we all new him very well, changed career was good for some 20 years then got the redundancy, done one of the courses took 5 months full time (£8000)to complete basically sort of picked up where i left off, been out there working as sole trader for some time now and still got lots to learn, would not say Im a top class plumber or know it all! but competent in what I do what ever job that may be, still phone a couple of plumber mates if I need a bit of support and they help without all the s** some get on here. yes no full apprentice completed but will continue to learn and will complete all jobs as they should, if im unsure of a job then I will do my home work to ensure it is as it should be. had many recommendations now and will endeavor to continue, cc yes i have changed but not a cowboy by far, if a job is worth doing its worth doing Right as my old fella would say. So good luck to all that are having shot at it but do the job as you would expect if you were paying for it top class don't become a ccc.

Hello 'new2it', nice of you to join us, I'm the infamous D1ck Puller, Glasgow's Cultural Attache to the Court of St. James and general CC/CCC basher.

Your wee story sort of begs the question; why did you not carry on with your apprenticeship?? Also, did the media hype of the £80K/year, have any influence on you when you were made redundant??
