Portable air con unit

I’ve had an Amazon voucher sitting round for ages. Thinking last night, might buy a portable air con unit (up to £300) seems a bit of a minefield to the uninformed (me)
Any advice or recommendations?

I've had some experience using one of those units in a flat in Spain (can't remember the brand, nothing I had heard of). They work very well in terms of lowering the room temperature, but the vent hose is a pain - it's bulky, and needs to be fitted to a window when in use, which we always struggled to do reliably. Also, they are not quiet.

If you search for something like "air conditioner window vent kit" you'll see the trouble you are setting yourself up for. Hopefully you can find a solution that works for you.

The air conditioner units that require an outside vent pipe are, in my experience, the only ones that work well. They have a compressor and refrigerant and work like a fridge - taking heat from the room and transferring it outside - hence the need for the vent.
Other units advertised as "air conditioners" don't need a vent outside and so are superficially attractive. But they just cool by evaporation of water - you fill them with water which soaks into something porous inside and a fan blows air across this, removing heat because of the water's required latent heat of vapourisation. In my experience they are not very effective and of course they increase the humidity of the room which makes it feel hotter!
