We are putting a new kitchen in from scratch and the missus wants a quiet extractor fan, is there such a thing as I have said there isn't ?

Also is there a specification of how much air/smell an extractor fan should extract over a period of time.

check out the technical spech as this gives you the extraction rate and the decibel leval of the fan, so once you have chosen one you like you can compare manufacturer on spech choice!

I have fitted a chimney extractor before where the motor/fan was mounted on the outside wall, I think it was made by Elica. This was obviously very quiet but I would have thought the extraction rate would be less than normal as the fan is situated further from the hob.

im sure a good spark could move the motor outside on any extractor. The other thing is remembering to use big pipes to keep wind noise down.
