Hello, I'm in desperate need of some helpful advice. For the last few years we've had issues with rats getting in to our house. We live in a semi detached house and along with our neighbour we have had countless pest experts up to take a look, our houses are surrounded by concrete paths and tarmac drives, all vents are secure, there is nothing that anyone has picked up on at ground level. We have both paid £300 each to have our drains surveyed, a fault was found on our side so we repaired it. We were warned that once we repaired the fault that some rats may be trapped in the cavities/attic so to be prepared to catch them with traps. We left baited traps out but caught nothing, 3-4 weeks later we could smell the smell of death, a disgusting smell but we were glad it was there, it meant the rat/s were definitely trapped and must be dying off. No more rats!! Fast forward 3 months, the scratching is back, so we popped a night vision camera in our attic to see what was going on, and the bloody rats are back!! What else can we do? Who can we phone for advice? I don't want to pay another pest controller to come and tell me what I already know.
In alot of houses the soil pipe passes from below the house all the way into loft and some out throu the roof, most will be boxed in but rats and mice can easly clime up into loft, within the boxed in section.
It is also worth having a stock of these https://www.screwfix.com/p/pest-stop-rodent-wax-blocks-10g-15-pack/7894x. They work very well, takes about 3 to 5 days. WEAR GLOVES WHEN HANDLING THEM they are very strong. We live near a river and often get them. First sight out go the blocks.
We live near a river too, a few houses on our estate have issues with rats. We've tried all sorts of posion, even the specialist stuff, they're just so smart and won't go near any of it but I'll give these blocks a go, thanks for the recommendation!
I have one of the ultrasonic repellers in the garage that also seems to have stopped critters nibbling things. May be worth popping one in the loft on an extesion lead as a trial.
We had awful trouble with mice charging around in the cavity wall and ceiling, one died under the floor, the pong was awful - most likely a few chewed up cables under there. So we got the attached a few years ago, now no mice in the house at all now, have to do a lot more hoovering though.
Had rats in the upstairs of my garage, used the bait blocks to kill them off, then the mice came. Used the same bait blocks to get rid of the mice. This happened a few times until I blocked up all of the entry points around doors and under the eaves. No rats, or mice since.
