According to my mum, I used to enjoy reading, but then stopped it for years and years (apart from what I’ve had to pass my exams/courses). I’ve recently been trying to force myself to read again, be it paperback or Kindle et al.

The trouble is I tend to get bored, my mind wanders or usually like to pickup my iPad and come on here/another forum. Or I fall asleep (as I read mainly in the evenings). Sometimes I just like to enjoy watching tv with the wife.

Anybody else suffer from this problem? Anyone got any tips? I try to read either about my existing job or electrics in my lunchtime at work, but have to be in the right mindset.

Anyone else read for pleasure?

I read for pleasure but only when travelling by car or train because I can't watch stare at the phone or ipad on the road since I get sick. It's a very common problem nowadays because it's more entertaining to watch a TV show or film, and there is nothing bad about it. You just shouldn't read books if you don't like it.

In all probability, you, like most of the population, have had your brain re-mapped by computer/mobile/tv. Something to do with the frequency of the flashing images makes it difficult to tear oneself way from it. The brain is wired to want a reward of endorphins. Memes, you-tube shorts, computer games, all are designed to quickly and easily give the brain a little endorphin boost, which quickly dissipates leaving the brain wanting another shot. We are, nearly all of us, addicted.
Difficult, higher effort tasks, such as work or reading(especially dull old paper which doesn't flicker) require much more effort. The reward is much greater, but the brain is conditioned to be lazy, so it is like eating a succession of sweets rather than cooking and eating a proper meal.
Younger people who have grown up with computers and smartphones have been found to simply not have the capacity for attention span than former generations, though the former generations are found to not have the mental stamina that they used to have. This seems to result in lethargy, depression, isolation, nihilism and a whole heap of other negative effects.
The only solution is to drastically limit ones use of mobile and computer, and wean yourself off the addiction. Re-find the delight in reading, learning, talking, playing sport or engaging in creative hobbies. The result will be a restored attention span and a dramatic improvement in mental, and emotional, resilience.
We have become digital junkies, and only the individual can save themself.

Cracking detailed response. Thank you.

Let alone the fact that print on paper is so bloody small and difficult to see after a certain age. Cooking instructions onn food can be a real git to read, where on an electronic device it is easily adjusted in font size, typeface, contrast etc.

What's the best way of reading books online?

I just tried downloading a book into Books on my iPad (hope it's free). I adjusted the settings to make the text larger and to scroll down, as below.

However, I think I would rather have it on the 43" screen attached to my Windows laptop.

No idea, don’t really read online, apart from forums/research

i'm the same i struggle to find the concentration on a nighttime to pick up a book, i tend to watch tv, i would probably say keep the ipad well out of site and turned off if you want to stick to a book

I can access my iCloud on my laptop (MS Windows) and see my Photos etc but not my Books. Is there a way of doing it? I may have missed something obvious.

I used to read a lot at one time, as a kid it was books and entire encyclopedias, comics and so on, I would spend hours reading but as I got older I tended to read only things that really interested me otherwise I would find something more interesting to do. These days prints so small I need glasses to read it and my eyes become tired after a while or I become bored, its the same for almost everyone I know so its nothing unusual.

Took a long time to find a device I was happy reading from, went through Ebook readers and kindles, they all ended up repurposed, given away or binned, never got on with them.

Its no good trying to read a book if your not into it and I tend to think that if I find something more interesting to do then the thing I move on from wasn't that interesting anyway !

Gland it’s not just me then, thanks. I read a free kindle book about Richard Pryor recently - that was good.

This is something my little group of reprobates... errr I mean friends talked over a few weeks ago, something about me always finding something to do in my spare time, hardly ever sitting still, it led to others saying the same thing about reading books or magazines becoming less of a past time than it used to be, I think its because we have all done that and as we get older or our lives become busier we need something more interesting to do, especially if your like me and like to learn new things, some of us never loose the desire to learn, its what makes us who we are and there is nothing at all odd about it.

Also I think it makes starting conversations with people easier, there is so much more to talk about than the weather !

I never got the hang of reading on hand held devices so I use my laptop for most if it when I do read, with a good laptop rest or table you can read almost hands free at a fixed distance that is more comfortable and you can set the font and size to your liking, bear in mind of course we read books for relaxation and I personally do not find a device feels the same as a book, that's just me though, millions of other people manage it but its not my thing.
