We are in the process of changing our varnished staircase to white with an oak effect handrail and post tops.

I'm looking for recommendations of what product to use to and process to follow achieve the oak look. Ideally whatever we use will be hard wearing so that the handrail doesn't become scruffy.

I've read good things about matt varnish. Would anyone recommend this?

You need to know the art of False Graining using Scrumble Glaze and a host graining tools with a knowledge of flogging to achieve this effect, may be something on YouTube. Suppliers names to look into are Radcliffe another is Polyvine as they both did or still do supply the required materials either in a traditional oil base or modern acrylic materials. Maybe best to get someone in or replace the handrail to real oak. Haven't seen the tools needed around for years so ebay may be a good place to look.
