Replacing 2 wire old thermostat with Nest 3rd Gen

Hey all,

Having had a read around I just wanted to check the following would work.

I intend to get a Nest 3rd Gen and replace my old hallway thermostat with it. The old one only used a two wire system and is used to control my British Gas Programmer which is located near the boiler.

I understand that you can install the Heat Link system to replace the programmer, but from what I've read you can also use the Nest to simply send the signal to the original programmer using the 2 wires already present, as shown here:

I just want to be able to switch heating on and off and set timers, so pretty simple setup.

All the videos seem to be US based so just wondered if there are any issues with doing this in the UK?

Cheers

Chris

You can do this, mine was a 2 wire stat to a programmer connected to a combi. From memory the nest just needs power to it, thats why it will work from a stand with plug in power. I basically used the wires from the old stat and switched them in the nest hub that replaces the programmer to form the live and neutral. Mine wasnt straight forward as I had wiring left from a boiler change. Easiest way I found if you dont know what the wires in the programmer go to was to use a multimeter and enough power cable to complete a continuity test and label up and then it was just a case of connecting to the nest hub which replaces the old programmer. Just be careful as I learnt the next heatlink is not the best quality connectors and its easy if you have little movement to not connect the wires in the heatlink as the contacts are tiny.
