Just moved into a new house and replacing an old ceiling light. I replaced many lights in my old house but haven’t seen this many wires before so wanted to check…

Attached picture shows three cables with:

    1) cable with a red, black (with brown electrical tape around it), and earth,
    2) cable with red, black (no tape), and earth
    3) cable with red black and earth

I need to remove the strip to fit in the new pendant which only has L, N, Loop, and Earth terminals.

Does the black (with brown tape) go in the L? Reds in Loop, Remaining black wires in N, and yellow/green stripes in earth?

    Thanks,

    Yes.

Can't see the brown tape but I assume you mean this one.

I would say that the red is Live /loop & black with brown tape would be a switch live to lamp.

Correct, it’s a very small piece of tape that is barely visible but I had a guess that it was different given its position relative to the other black wires.

    Thanks for the help

Out of interest, why would there be so many cables for a single light, with only one light switch connected to it?

    Make sense?
