Roof Joist Spacings

    Hi

    I am hoping to put the roof on my workshop this weekend.
    any one able to tell me the spacing between roof joists.

    400mm centres is the norm

    No it`s not, it`s 16" ;)

    decorator they are arguing about 6.something millimeters

    6mm may be nothing to you but if there are 1000 rafters each side you'd be 6 metres short one end.

    That's a big gap to conceal with mastic

    with a shed that big the planning people MIGHT NOT spot the 6m difference :)

    It depends if you are putting on sheeting material or not.

    Some comes metric i.e. 2400mm units so use 400mm

    Some comes imperial ie 8 ft or 2440mm so use 16in.

    take your measuring tape
    it may or may not have diamonds or triangles at 18" and or 400mm centres for this purpose[marking out for sheet material]

    It used to be 16" centers but now with metric sheets you need 400mm.

    with the way my local mill cuts the flipping wood, a 50mm timber can be anything from 46 to 53mm, so 6mm either way isn't soemthing I'd worry too much about. Anyway mark them at 403 mm and you're between the two;-)

    UKWOODY If you put your joists at 400mm or 16" centres it does not mater what thickness your timber is.
