Roofing felt above eaves/starter course?

    Hi all,

Looked at a stone slate roofed property recently and the felt has been sandwiched between the eaves/starter course and the first course of slates. I have come across this on a few other properties, again stone slate roofs.

Is there any legitimate reason for doing this or is it incorrect? Surely any moisture that runs down the felt would end up trapped behind the top edge of the eaves slates?

It's correct. Any moisture that runs down the felt ends up in the gutter, as your photo shows.

It's not normal practice though, so why do it?
