    morning everyone,

I’m removing the back chimneys from the ground floor up to the loft, but leaving the front chimneys in. There both on the same party wall in different rooms.

The engineer is suggesting, to support the back chimney stack, a steel spanning the house running in front of the remaining front chimney.

My concern is the steel won’t be under the chimney stack but in front of it. I imagine he’ll suggest a plate on top of the steel to support the edge of the chimney stack.

    Is this common?

Your SE will detail exactly how it needs to be done and should get it approved by BC.

Gallows brackets are another option which may be acceptable and a whole lot easier to do.
