    Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2021 – Competition Terms & Conditions



    The Promoter is Screwfix Direct Limited (company number 3006378) of Trade House Mead Avenue Yeovil BA22 8RT.



    What is the Competition? Screwfix Trade Apprentice Competition is our search for the UK and Ireland’s best trade apprentices. We are looking for future tradespeople who are currently undertaking an apprenticeship or studying full-time at college for a qualification in any of the categories related to construction, planning, the built environment, engineering, and manufacturing. To qualify, applicants must be enrolled at college and need to either have a part-time placement with an employer or be a full-time college student.



    1. The prize will be a trade starter bundle worth approximately £10,000, or equivalent in Euros (dependent on the exchange rate at the time of the winner being selected), including a tablet and a laptop with accessories (make and models to be confirmed on announcement of the winner), a business software package (up to £2000), £5,000 worth of credit to spend at Screwfix, and an allowance (up to £3000) to spend on career enhancing courses/workshops e.g. website design, business accounts and finance, specialist trade courses etc (“Prize”). Screwfix will reimburse the Screwfix approved supplier/provider directly. Screwfix reserves the right to consider and review any proposed supplier/provider and Screwfix has the right to refuse any proposed supplier/provider and source an alternative.



    2. The Competition is open to all UK and Republic of Ireland residents aged 16 years old and over who are enrolled in a college either in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, or Republic of Ireland on an apprenticeship scheme that includes on-the-job experience and off-the-job training, or a full-time student leading to a recognised trade related qualification. Entrants can enter at any level of their studies. Entrants must be enrolled in a construction, a planning and building environment related course, a Business Services Industry (e.g. Electrical and Plumbing), or an Engineering/Mechanical related course. No purchase necessary, entry and participation is free.

    3. Entry into the Competition will open on 8th Feb 2021 and will close at 23:59 on 21st February 2021 (the “Entry Period”). No bulk entries or entries via third parties will be accepted. Employees and their immediate families of Screwfix, Screwfix Direct (Ireland) Limited or anyone else connected professionally with the Competition cannot enter. Only one entry will be accepted per person.

    4. Entrants must provide details of the college they are attending. Entrants can (but do not have to) provide their on-the-job employer details. Entrants agree that Screwfix may contact their college for a reference, as well as their employer (if details are provided). Colleges and employers are asked to encourage their students/employees to enter personally, and they can enter on behalf of their students / employees, always providing that they have obtained the entrants consent to do so and their approval of these Terms and Conditions before entering them.

    5. Participants must enter the Competition by the link on the UK or Ireland landing page at www.screwfix.com/sfta or https://www.screwfix.ie/sfta, to complete and submit the entry form, during the Entry Period.

    6. Entry forms will be judged by Screwfix and the best entries (in their sole discretion) will be shortlisted for the semi-final (“Semi-Finalists”).

    7. Semi-Finalists will be required to record a 3-5-minute video of themselves presenting an answer to a/some generic questions or to take part in a video interview at the agreed time. Videos will be judged by Screwfix and independent judges, including but not limited to various trade bodies and Mcann (together the “Judge”), on a candidate’s professionalism, creativity, innovation, enthusiasm, and knowledge of their trade industry. The Semi-Finalists will then be further shortlisted with the Judge selecting the best entries (“Finalists”).

    8. The final will take place in the week commencing the 19 April 2021 (the “Final”) where the Judge will conduct the last interview with the Finalists before selecting and announcing the winner (“Winner”). Specific details of date, time, and virtual location will be disclosed to the Semi-Finalists in advance of the event. Finalists under the age of 18 are required to be accompanied by a parent, or guardian over the age of 18 years old. It is essential that Semi-Finalists are available for their interviews, where required by the Judge, during the shortlisting process and available to virtually attend the Final. The Judge reserves the right to disqualify any Semi-Finalist who is not available during the selection process, not available to virtually attend the Final, or who cannot be contacted within a week of contact being initiated by the Judge.

    9. The Prize will be awarded to the entrant that the Judge considers to be most worthy of the title “Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2021”. The criteria used to judge entries will be marked on a scale of one to ten, and based on all the information in their entry, their college and any employer feedback, their video and interviews, including but not limited to:

    9a. Personality and presentation:

    • Ambassador qualities for Screwfix and for the Trade Apprentice industry?

    • Demonstration of a professional approach?

    • Ambition and the drive to succeed as a future Tradesperson?

    • Enthusiasm about their work?

    • Positivity?

    9b. Competence:

    • Qualifications, current and future?

    • Innovative?

    • Accreditations?

    9c. Beyond the call of duty:

    • Hero story?

    • Overcoming adversity?

    • Defying the odds?

    • Standing out from other students/apprentices?

    • Active promotion of apprenticeships?



    10. The decision of the Judge will be final and unchallengeable, and, in their absolute discretion, they may declare void any entry or the Competition itself. Should they consider that there are no entries reaching a required standard, the Judge can award prizes or not, as they deem fit. The Judge may also decide, in their absolute discretion, to change the rules of the Competition while it is running, if it appears to them that it would be equitable or desirable to do so. No correspondence will be entered. The Judge may also decide, in their absolute discretion, to disqualify any entrant for any reason at any point in the Competition.

    11. The Prize shall be used by the Winner in a personal capacity to further their career. The entry and Prize is personal and non-transferable, unless otherwise agreed in writing by Screwfix. No cash alternative or other Prize alternatives are available, except that in the event of unforeseen circumstances out of its control Screwfix reserves the right to offer an alternative Prize of equal value or greater. The credit cannot be exchanged for cash, and the allowance cannot be exchanged for cash or credit.



    12. The Prize will be sent to the Winner within 6 weeks following the Final. The £5k/Euro equivalent of Screwfix credit must be used within 12 months from date of receipt, and any outstanding amount not used after this time will be cancelled. Screwfix PR co-ordinator with the Winner to organise delivery of the Prize. Details will be determined when the Winner is announced – tailoring the Prize to the Winner’s specific area of study, trade and needs.


    13. Illegible, offensive, fraudulent or entries unjust to other entrants (including without limitation tampering with the operation of the Competition, cheating, hacking, deception or any other unfair playing practices such as intending to annoy, threaten or harass any other entrants or Screwfix and/or any of its agents or representatives, or to be acting in any manner deemed by Screwfix to be disruptive), in violation of these Terms and Conditions, entries lost, mislaid, damaged, or delayed beyond the Entry Period, will be disqualified. Screwfix accepts no responsibility for disqualified entries, interrupted or unavailable network service or other connections. By submitting your entry, you hereby declare that all information submitted is true, accurate, current, and complete. Screwfix reserves the right to check the validity of any entry.

    14. Screwfix reserves the right to request consent from the Semi-Finalists to participate in publicity events in relation to this Competition, and the Winner may, with their consent be required to participate in PR which will involve a photography shoot and press releases. In particular, Screwfix may publish the Winner’s Christian name and hometown/County, photographs and footage of entrants and the Winner with their Prize, and any personal statements given (together the “Material”) in future editions of its publications and websites (including social media and other media and press). The Semi-Finalists and Winner may be required to undertake further PR activity (including videos and interviews) in the year of winning, as well as in the future Competitions (if the Competition is repeated).

    15. By entering in the Competition, each entrant agrees to grant Screwfix, Screwfix Direct (Ireland) Limited and its affiliates a perpetual, royalty-free, exclusive, worldwide licence to publish and broadcast and otherwise use the Material in any media including the unlimited right to sub-licence. Each participant further confirms that the publishing or broadcast of such material will not breach any third party’s intellectual property or associated rights and that any necessary permissions have been obtained. The Winner may use Screwfix’s name and the Trade Apprentice logo, with Screwfix’s express written consent.
    16. To the full extent permissible by law, neither Screwfix nor its parent company, affiliates, directors, officers, employers or agents shall be liable to you for any claim in respect of any losses (including without limitation special, indirect or consequential losses), injuries, or damages of any kind whatsoever arising from or connected to the Competition.

    17. Entrants will be deemed to have read, understood and accepted these terms and conditions upon entering the Competition. Screwfix reserves the right to withdraw the Competition at any time if circumstances make this necessary. The decision of Screwfix is final and binding in all matters relating to this Competition. Screwfix will not enter any correspondence in relation to the Competition.



    18. This Competition is governed by the law of England and the courts of England will have exclusive jurisdiction in relation to any dispute arising from the entry or interpretation of these terms and conditions.

    19. By entering the Competition, all entrants consent to Screwfix contacting them for the purposes of this Competition, agree to provide their personal data as set out on the application form, and such data shall be processed in accordance with Screwfix Privacy Policy available at www.screwfix.com/privacypolicy.
