I live in an old house. It was built in 1888. I bought the house in 2020. It was a standard 2 up 2 down and over the years with an extension here and there it became a four bedroom house. With it being an old house I get all the usual niggles you’d expect. One I can’t work out is that every so often, coming from the kitchen (an extension) there will be a sewage smell in the morning, and then for a day or two after I get wafts of white spirit in the kitchen. I’ve checked the traps and everything is as it should be. When I bought the house I noticed an overflow pipe coming out of the wall from the kitchen into the lean to (between the soil stack and the back door). A little bit of waste water was escaping so I blocked it and capped it. This was back when I bought it in 2020
Under the stairs I have a toilet and a sink. The waste runs out at a 45 degree angle under the floor, through the kitchen, out into the lean to area where it connects to the soil stack. I’ve had the soil stack checked and cleaned and nothing was found. Everything is, in my beginners opinion, as it should be. I just can’t work out why, every so often, these smells appear?
