Smell in new bathroom

hi folks had a complete new bathroom fitted 4 weeks ago and have been plagued by a horrible chemical foul smell thought it was just because everything was new or it was some of the materials used
My suspicions is that they builders have not connected the fast flow shower waste properly and left parts out (please see photo)all I have is a little cup that sits inside the drain when I open the shower cubicle it’s rife and smelling the drain itself it smells like poo, in the bottom of the trap there is a about 1 inch of water and the little cup holds water too after a shower do you guys think the fast flow waste is causing the stench ??

Try blocking the shower waste with a damp cloth to do a temporary test to see if smell stops.
There should be a cup in many of the shower traps to create a seal.
Get the builders back to sort it as they are responsible to have it all working perfect.
Really should be a plumber or someone very experienced in plumbing to have done the shower wastes and other pipes. “Builder” can mean just anybody

Many thanks for your reply it was a luxury bathroom installation company who we got to do the job so i assume they were experienced plumbers, as well as the cup should there not be something that sits in the cup then a cover to completely seal the drain like the diagram I’ve posted

This is the actual fast flow waste used

You should also have a cover (usually chromed) to fit over the waste, but they are only cosmetic and do not make a seal.
The cup part is a seal.

I wouldn’t say all bathroom firms always use plumbers or do the plumbing professionally

My understanding is ( and Im no expert) just reading on google is that the catch cup holds the water and is for hair grime etc but there should be chrome dip tube which has a rubber seal on it and when you push that into the waste cup then the water in the cup is the seal
They arrived this morning with baking soda and vinegar which I’ve already tried it did freshen it up for a short while but back to stinking again shortly after

You could be correct about that trap design. Some it is only a cover. Certainly should have had the top part supplied

The chrome cover that's missing is the reason for the smell. It needs to be on the create the seal to stop foul smells from venting . You need to go back to the plumbers and find out what they've done with it! Otherwise you'll need to buy a replacement part

Hello ecoplumbing really appreciate your reply having spent ages on different websites and forums looking at this type of problem it seems that you are spot-on I have told the plumber this and he is coming back tomorrow with the missing parts in your experience would the smell be so strong that you can actually smell it Throughout the full House??? its one of these stenches you smell all the time we have to keep the bathroom door shut and keep it Located to the one room
We have been in this house for 15 years I never had a problem in that bathroom with smells Until this new bathroom was installed we have a new low-profile shower tray so there is no P-trap underneath like what we had before
Hopefully once the drain is properly sealed the smell will dissapear we can start to use the bathroom as it cost us nearly 6k to install

I'm assuming the shower waste will be connected to your soil pipe which then connects to the main sewer so this is the reason why the foul smells are so bad. Might just be a genuine mistake by the plumbers, they may have misplaced it and not realised but for 6k I'd expect them to come back and fit a new trap. Once the chrome top has been fitted and the rubber o ring underneath is fully pushed down I guarantee the smells will stop

It's worth also pointing out that even though you've ended up with only half the shower waste, your drains shouldn't smell nasty in any case. It might be worth getting someone to investigate this for you too (but ask around to see who your neighbours use as there are some "drainage experts" who are even bigger cowboys than us plumbers...!)

Hi joe a I’ve had no issue with any odours for the last 15 years until my complete new bathroom was fitted 4 weeks ago surely if you have a waste that is attatched to a stack that takes the poo away and not is not sealed the outcome is the stench will come back up way and enter the bathroom through the shower waste it is the only drain in the room that has a smell coming for it??

Drains are not going to smell of roses!
Doesn't matter how clean the drains are, if gases can escape somewhere, especially in a closed space like a bathroom then it will smell.

Exactly eco it when I put my nose to the shower drain you can actually feel the air swirling about like a wind tunnel the fact that these new quick fit shower traps don’t trap the gases as well as a normal p trap all the more or having the waste installled as manufacturers instructions not leave bloody parts out he is coming today with the missing parts I will keep you informed thanks again for all your advice and opinion much appreciated

Hi sparkielev Yes looks like this is the case here think it’s a case of handy men having a go at all trades as the alleged plumber done the electrical and joinery work
I will not be letting them away with this even if it means ripping the full bathroom out
It’s the fact that the smell is coming down stairs into my living space that is really getting me I need to keep the bathroom door closed but it still gets through vents ect

Those shower traps usually come free with the tray so they're not the best quality . I'm not saying they're not fit for purpose but as a personal preference I normally choose a mcalpine trap for the sake of an extra £20 . Especially if the tray is being sunk into the floorboards, you want a trap which will last

You may have opened a can of worms by saying the plumber also did the electrics
