    Hi all,

Can anyone help me understand staircase lighting wiring by explaining (or drawing if its easier) where the wires for T&E and 3-core go in each of the diagrams? I'm an electrical apprentice and want to grasp this before I tackle it in the workplace. The diagram is for a 2 gang to 1 gang switch example and then a 2 gang to 2 gang example.

If you can get it to work as a 1 way then add a 3 core from one switch to the other, that's basically it.

But instead of having 1 wire in com and 1 wire in L1 you move them to L1 and L2 and connect the 3 core the same in both switches.

    Simple? Yes?

two-way-real.jpg two-way-plus-inter.jpg The old circuit diagrams, I say old and things have changed with smart switches, we can now have wireless and two wire between the switches, and the wires may not be low voltage any more, I know my landing lights is extra low voltage to switches, and it works a smart relay in the lamp.

Thanks for your help everyone - very much appreciated. I have added colours to MGW's post does these diagrams seem right? Do I bridge the Common as in the 2nd diagram? Apologies if not, very junior, so please be forgiving!

The 2-gang to 2-gang looks wrong. What is meant to be the purpose of having 2 upstairs switches?

To turn the downstairs lights on/off from upstairs

In that case you probably need 2 x 3+E between the switches.

Bear in mind that often downstairs and upstairs lights are on separate circuits with their own RCBOs.

I agree upload_2024-2-6_13-33-56.png would be my take in it. Since L1 is line supply, if up stairs and down stairs are on the same circuit you can do it with two less wires and link the L1's at each switch, but often up and down stairs are not on the same circuit.

Run 2 x 3core cables up and down switches, up switch run 1mm to up light, down switch 1mm to down light mark the 3core at each end so you don't get mixed up

  15. Don't forget to oversleeve live conductors with brown collars where appropriate.

I did consider colours, but they should all be brown, I know we use the three phase colours as easier to trace, but there is no standard on which colour goes where as should all be brown.

So decided better not to use any colours.
