Anyone in here had one?

I think i have one. Got to go for an Endoscopy. Awaiting appointment.

Had Endoscopy 30 years ago. It was horrible!

Had the start of one years ago, no problems after about 4 months on nothing spicier than Guinness, I have a hiatus hernia now, my first endoscopy I was out cold, definitely the nicer way, had one recently and I was working the next day so no sedative, going with just a throat spray is grim, very grim.
On the up side omeprazole is pretty good.

Poster #3,
So, your posts self-report you taking various kinds of alcohol, most recently Beaujolais and a four month spell on Guinness.
You seem to be saying that a Colonoscopy was started but was then abandoned forcing you onto Guinness for some months - why was the Colonoscopy abandoned it must have been a terrible experience ... ...
for the medics.

"grim, very grim" - thats because they didn't change the camera's between insertions.

Just a thought but please God the Colonoscopy thing was eventually removed?

There was talk some time back about a micro camera like a pill that you could swallow and it took images all the way through , retrieved in due course at journey's end...... don't know if they ever came to fruition.

I suffer with stomach and duodenal ulcers due a life long condition, most are treated with medication these days unless its left and causes damage. The most common cause of them is helicobacter priori, a gut bacteria, if its present then the treatment with medication is usually successful and at some point you will be retested, either by direct sample or a non invasive test, your gastroenterologist will explain all this to you at some point.

I have yearly endoscopy, the camera used today is thinner than that 30 years ago and the procedure doesn't take long, you will be offered two options, awake with a anaesthetic throat spray or sedation, I have mine done with neither due to complications, its somewhat uncomfortable but try to relax and breath normally, once done you have to wait for recovery if sedated or wait about half hour then go home and carry on, you may have wind afterwards, that is some of the discomfort but doesn't last long.

First one I had was pretty bad and landed me in hospital but back then treatment was limited and no one knew about helicobacter, its pretty common to have it but not everyone develops ulcers, the most common symptom is often gastritis in one form or another.

The micro camera isn't as small as people think and due to how it travels through the digestive tract, not always successful in finding anything and if it does, depending where the problem is, you would need further investigation anyway.

That is for the small intestine where they can't really get an endoscope.

The worst part is drinking the liquid beforehand and running to the toilet for hours to empty the intestine.
I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy at the same time with the throat spray for the colonoscopy and an iv injection of buscopan and fentanyl. Both were uncomfortable but not too bad. At least you can go home after having a cup of tea.

I had both an endoscopy and a colonoscopy without sedation, which weren't pleasant and showed nothing wrong. (And a liver biopsy which I think was just done because they were sadists.)

Eventually I had emergency abdominal surgery to remove adhesions causing a small bowel obstruction. At one point I had:
A canula connected to a drip;
Which was also connected to pain relief;
A tube through my nose supposedly to keep my stomach drained;
Oxygen because the above made it hard to breathe;
A metal tube in my left side to deliver pain relief;
A metal tube in my right side to deliver pain relief;
A tube to drain the blood seeping from the surgical wound;
And a catheter which I think they just put in for fun.

Throat spray for the colonoscopy!!

I had an endoscopy without sedation last year, it wasnt very nice at all but it was only 6 minutes.

If you have sedation you'll be there 2/3 hours to recover.

I had similar 30 years ago and agree it was horrible. However, I had another one last year and they sprayed the back of my throat with an anesthetic and I didn't feel a thing. When they use the spray be careful to depress your tongue so it reaches the back of your throat.

Good luck.

The only good thing about sedation is you can get away with buying new tools with less scrutiny, day before bang the order in for delivery, just use the grogginess as an excuse, I dont even have sedation and I use it as a get out of jail card, may as well get something out of it.

Kind Regards,

A Sneak.
