We had some old 1930’s doors stripped of paint, now a number of them have come back with what I can only describe as a mass of splinters, in some areas there are a lot so removing them will remove a chunk of the door…. Is there a recommended way to salvage these ‘chunks’?

My father in law who is fixing up ours just sands them back as best as possible. Don't pick at them too much.

(He's not a joiner btw so not sure if there is a proper process)
