Assume you mean a lighting circuit controlled by three switches?? Look here: http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/DataSheets/MK/WiringDiagrams.pdf Bazza
a 3 swtch unut .has three switches and works form 3 different switches Had a second look. still none the wiser. Trip
I mean a 3 swtch unut .has three switches and works form 3 different switches Perhaps you mean a 3-gang switch. In which case you'll have to indicate the number of wires in the wall box, and the types of circuit, e.g. 1-Way, 2-Way etc. Pb
yes your right there are three red two black and it is 2 way So, a 3-gang switch, and presumably 2x1-Way & 1x2-Way - perhaps for Porch, Hall & Landing? Try to make the guesswork a little easier by indicating the types of cable, e.g:2 x twin & earth plus 1 x single red? Do any of the wires have markings (in the form of sleeving, tape etc). Do confirm also, that the switch box has an earth connection. . . . Pb
yes 2 twin &earth one single red earth in box not on switch . no markings . one twin and earth is live wire
yes 2 twin &earth one single red earth in box not on switch . no markings . one twin and earth is live wire Well Mr 3 way swirch, you seem to be a man of few words and even less punctuation. . . . . Taking that 'yes' (above) to be confirmation that it's a 3-gang switch, used to control 2 x 1-way ciruits and 1 x 2-way circuit (and that you didn't really mean 'one single red earth'). Then there will be 3 switches each with the following terminal markings: C, L1, L2. One likely connection is as follows. However, there are other permutations, so if doubt remains, consult a competent person: Isolate circuit at fusebox/consumer unit. Connect a short red link between all 3 terminals marked 'C'. Mark the 2 black leads with red sleeving (or tape). Connect the live (red) feed of that twin & earth to the first switch terminal 'C' and its corresponding black (presumed here to be a 'switched live') to terminal L2 of that same switch. Connect the single red to the middle switch, terminal L2. Connect the remaining twin pair (presumed to be 2-way strapping wires) to the third switch L1 & L2. Ensure that the switch box is effectively earthed, and that the cpc (earthwire) is insulated with green/yellow sleeving. If the switch plate is metallic it also must be earthed. If switches appear to be working 'upside-down', then interchange connections from L2 to L1. Pb
