The cost of civil disobedience?

Perhaps society could provide a job in the first place so they didn't need benefits.

It is not society's job to find work for people - it is up to the individual - unless you believe in the concept of Soviet Tractor factories.
That said, there is an argument to introduce a workfare arrangement in return for benefits.

I do not believe that anyone should be paid for sitting at home, if you are getting £80.00 of jobseekers then do £80.00 of work perhaps cleaning your neighbourhood up, this could be perhaps 8 hours of work, it would still leave plenty of time to look for permanent work, however wether this would be the thin end of the wedge that would encourage companies to get rid of staff so as the unemployed did the work is another issue

If the work offered was paid at a fair rate, I see no reason why anyone should object to a little work for to contribute something towards their benefits.

The real brilliance of giving benefits only if people work is the lazy type will find they have no choice but to accept one of the job types offered, or get off benefits with a job elsewhere.
It will also help get scroungers types off benefits.
Then there is the type who have never worked and to put them into a job could give them focus in life and confidence.

It’s a good idea, and is popular with many voters. That’s why both Labour and Conservative governments have tried it.

But unfortunately it doesn’t seem to work well in real life (just like the dossers it targets), and that’s why it was cancelled.

Does that mean the idea is bad? Not necessarily, it could be the implementation that was flawed.

Yes, clearly the problem would be many of the people will be unwilling to work properly, or incapable of even basic tasks.
Drug or Alcoholic types and perhaps a criminal element as well would not be ideal for jobs.
And we will get claimants wanting an injury.
But I think still worth trying to get decent people into helping society and hopefully also themselves.
So much talk nowadays about people depressed and weight problems or alcohol abuse in reality due to no focus in their life
