This is a joke..... right?

I'm outraged that a joke could cause such outrage.
Michael Gove apologises for 'clumsy' Weinstein joke on Today - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41787710

Is this another symptom of the two types of folk, DA was referring to?
As it's the BBC, I can't imagine that the guests in the audience were predominantly made up of brexiteers, but the laughter was spontaneous.
Even the host and those on the panel had a good giggle.
What is inherently wrong with those who choose to kick up such a fuss about..
A joke?

I saw this on story Facebook earlier, some of the comments along the lines of "you wouldn't laugh if it happened to your daughter" etc etc

I responded along line of " At all times things we say will offend somebody somewhere, we can not go through life not saying things (making fun of) just because it might offened somebody somewhere, otherwise you get the BBC syndrome of not wanting to offended anybody but your own"

Needless to say I wasn't popular with some, but very popular with others (cue DA I bet the others voted Brexit line)

Well, helloooo Longs et IIR.

I was awake - and listening - when that conversation actually took place this morn. Yes, I wake up to my wife and Radio 4.

Two thing struck me as Michael opened his mouth - (1) it wasn't actually funny or witty as it was such an obvious - almost rehearsed - thing for a shallow-minded person to make, and (2) considering the offence that would almost certainly be caused by such a remark, what on earth possessed him to even risk it?

What a twit.

And Kinnock - to his now undoubted shame - chipped in with a follow-up, although it was mild in comparison.

I won't try and explain to you poor saps - men - why this is offensive to many (and should be all); suffice to say I am not surprised to hear this from two* folk who specialise at not considering others.

Ie - Brexiters.

* Longs - no surprise at all. IIR - a bit disappointed.

Well that's a shock NOT from DA, could you imagine how good old fashioned comedy would be viewed today, everybody would be insulted on behalf of others but not directly.
This is why we live in the sad world we do, people are just to scared to speak out for fear of this sort of reaction.
What he did/might of done (Weinstein) was/is deployable but that shouldn't stop people from making fun of it, this is a comedians bread and butter, has been forever and should be in the future.

IIR, I don't doubt you are appalled at what that fat slug Weinstein tried on because of his weight (and I don't mean physical).

And there IS room to make jokes at this. I think Gervais, for example, is a true genius and he hasn't caused offence to me at any time - because I know where he's 'coming from', and I know he's a genius so the jokes are genuinely brilliant. (Have you heard his 'daddy' joke?). It is ironic and it is satire.

But Corden and Gove - one has an excuse because he is supposedly a comedian - were simply not funny enough, they they didn't make the 'point' at Weinstein's expense enough; they just exploited a situation with a cheap joke that wasn't funny, didn't 'cut' at who it was intended for - and it was therefore in poor taste.

It really is a matter of judgement and balance. There are very very few truly 'bad taste' jokes as such; what makes them bad taste is who delivers them and how they are delivered.

Gove fluffed up. Big time.

He has no excuse.

Ah, that answered that question then. Thanks.

So, as I thought (but thanks for squaring it up) the reason people are offended by a joke, is because they want to be.
It's nothing but a tool, that given the right circumstances, can be employed to effectively denigrate someone whilst at the same time promoting their own image of righteousness.
Well, at least to those who agree with them, regardless.

A joke?

Brace yourself longs, I think the next week is going to get messy with sexual abuse claims, BBC, House of Commons, Jellyfish in North Devon.
There's a lot of bandwagons around at the moment, and people will be wanting to jump on them, not least DA.

Are you trying to say it doesn't matter who tells a 'sick' joke? The only thing that matters is the joke itself?

Well, it is indeed a shame that we all can't be 'men' like you, swaggering around, brushing off all slights and slurs, happy to stand back whilst women are harassed and intimidated, 'cos they cannot 'take it' like you blokes?

How reassuring it must be for them to hear that it's only a 'bandwagon' they are jumping on.

On key and as predicted. For every genuine claim, their will be ten false claims, they smell money, just look at how many bogus claims were exposed in the Jimmy Saville scandal. Shocking for the genuine victims I'm sure
As for the film industry, since the beginning, at the turn of the century, women have been queuing up offering sexual favours to advance their careers, it's said that Joan Crawford slept with every male actor in her studio, with the possible exception of Lassie.
Yes, we all know that sexual exploitation is wrong and should be condemned, but it works both ways mate.
Like I said, for every genuine claim, there will be ten false claims, aint got a linky for that, but I'm sure you'll agree.

So, yes, lots of women will be jumping on a lot of bandwagons, and while I'm

What will you be doing? apart from walking yer shitzu.

How many are doing just that though, i find it hard to believe that so many have just sat back and done nothing for so long yet continued to work with him, these are not vulnerable weak women here.
Im sure there is a reasonable case to answer its just how bad was it in real terms.

It has to be Raw as you call it, making jokes of old news just ain't funny.

It ain't funny when it's raw.

It's like making a joke about someone who died just today. It's raw, and it ain't funny.

Mr. HandyAndy - Really

blah blah blah Jimmy Saville blah false blah blah blah...

Like I said, for every genuine claim, there will be ten false claims, aint got a linky for that, but I'm sure you'll agree.

I do not agree with that at all.

That is an astonishing thing to claim, and it speaks volumes of your innate cynicism.

How ironic that you perceive - will - so many inadequacies in your fellow man (and woman), whereas for sheer pitifulness you only need to look in the mirror.

My case is rested - we all know for certain why some people vote 'cynically' as in Brexit. It's to try and bolster their fragile egos.

Kick kick kick, carp, whine, sl*g-off, criticise, kick, disparage, find fault with your fellow human beings who are almost to a person far superior to yourself in all respects.

You've out-Longed Longs, Filly.

Double-yuck.

I'm not surprised you disagree but I must say that I'm astounded by how quickly you've managed to bring Brexit into it, remarkable.
As for your insults, you truly are the most disgusting, vile and obnoxious person I've ever had the misfortune to encounter.

Why focus on some who may, possibly, have made the decision - "It'll be worth it to further my career?" And avoid the majority who were intimidated by the 'boss, were truly fearful (he's hardly an oil-painting) and - yes - also knew their whole careers would be destroyed if they'd said a word?

Don't you understand anything about 'power'?

It's sooo easy to dismiss them as 'grown up' women who should have known better, and were therefore somehow 'complicit' in their actions.

Would you say the same about the power level between, say, a teacher and an even mature student? Or a policeman and a victim of crime. Or a doctor and a patient?

Should all these people 'know better', have the balls to walk away and report?

Jeepers, no wonder the world is in such a pitiful state.

If btiw2 doesn't accept the 'parallels' I've been going on about, then I hope he lives happily with his graphs.

Bringing Brexit in to these issues is the easiest thing in the world.

I have made it clear where I see parallels - and they are lit up in huge neon lights as far as you and Longs are concerned.

'Disgusting'! 'Vile'! 'Obnoxious'! :D

Lol - 'rony has never been so abused.

You really haven't a clue what you are actually like, do you? Jeepers.

According to Filly, he only has to cite Joan Crawford to make a disparaging judgement on many (all?) female actors.

He only has to cite one terrorist to make a disparaging judgement on many (all?) Muslims.

Parallels? Man, they are super-imposed.

And all this coming from a misogynistic bigot!

Well, lol-de-lol.

It's fascinating that you should bring up teachers, policemen, doctors, posts where probably most of the abuse against women occurs, left wing, socialist, remain voting. Oops.
