I am fitting a new upstairs bathroom which was previously a tiled on top of wooden boarded floor.

The tile adhesive is extremely thick and uneven, I have tried removing it with a filling knife and hammer and chisel as well as using a wall paper steamer to moisten it but to no avail.

Could I use a self levelling compound with it being on the second floor or is this a no go?

    TIA
